Shirley Kwan, Class XXVII

Past-Chair

Shirley is devoted to making an impact on her community.  She currently serves as Chair-Elect for Leadership Houston and the Chinese Professional Club Scholarship Foundation as Vice President. She is active on the Personnel Committee at Sugar Creek Baptist Church and Asia Society’s Women’s Leadership Series committee. 

Her prior commitments include board positions on the Asian Chamber of Commerce, Asian Pacific American Heritage Association, Fort Bend Literacy Council, and the San Jacinto Girl Scouts Council.  She facilitated the OCA Mentoring Asian American Professional program for the past three years. Shirley shared her expertise on the finance committee of Sugar Creek Baptist for 6 years during the economic downturn as well as raised funds by co-chairing the Hope Clinic Luncheon, the Inspire Women Luncheon and the Texas Diversity Council Women’s Leadership Conference. She is a graduate of Project Blueprint, Ft Bend Chamber of Commerce Leadership, Leadership Houston - Class XXVII and a 2011 Fellow of Asian Pacific American Leadership for Women Institute (APALWI).  For her contributions to the community, Shirley was recognized as a DiversityFIRST Award Winner in 2013; in 2015 as OCA’s Outstanding Asian Pacific American in the workplace who “Serve with Honor”; and in 2016 as one of Houston Women’s Magazine 50 Most Influential Women. 

Professionally, Shirley Kwan serves as SVP at Amegy Bank in the Not-for Profit Group. Prior to joining Amegy in 2005, Shirley worked a major Houston bank providing treasury services for large corporates and tailoring these services to the needs of small businesses.  Shirley strives for inclusion as an Asian American by starting the Asian business/employee resource groups within both corporations. 

Outside of the Houston activities, Shirley enjoys serving with her husband, Dr. Peter Kwan, in Honduras for their church and in Alaska for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Heal Our Patriots.  Being empty nesters, she and her husband enjoy their two rescue dogs, Charlie and Sandy, and cat, Tipper.  Their two wonderful children, Melissa and Christopher have successful careers of their own also contribute to the community in their own ways.
